Jack Owen – Region I Director
Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington
I am a 63-year-old cattle rancher from Carter County, Mont. I, along with my wife Rosina and two sons, operate a cow-calf/yearling operation on the plains of southeast Montana. We also have a daughter. All are married now, and we have six grandchildren.
I grew up on the family ranch and have been here since graduating from Montana State University in 1975. Our family homesteaded the original part of our ranch in 1914. The place was run primarily as a sheep ranch for about 50 years. Since I became actively involved, cattle have been the main focus. The sheep were all sold in the early ’90s.
Currently, the ranch consists of deeded land, public leases (both state and federal) and private leases. Summer pastures are native grasses, while winter pastures are a mixture of crested wheat grass and native grasses. We put up our own hay and feed for about 120 days per year.
We became R-CALF USA members at the start. We are aware of the other groups and what their positions are. R-CALF is the one organization that represents our views on the issues that affect our markets and our working cowboy way of life. I would be honored to serve as R-CALF USA Region 1 Director.
