Highway 44\, Platte\, SD 57369 \nContact: Scott Kirsch\, Platte Livestock Market owner\, (605) 680-1900 or salebarn@midstatesd.net \n  \nDescription: Platte Livestock Market will host a rollover calf auction benefiting R-CALF USA at 2 p.m. Wednesday\, Sept. 24\, following a free barbeque lunch from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. For the fourth year in a row\, James Fulwider and Kevin Talsma\, of Iona\, South Dakota\, will donate a yearling steer with all proceeds going to R-CALF USA. \nBrett Kenzy\, co-chair of R-CALF USA’s Checkoff Committee\, will speak about the organization’s ongoing efforts to address key issues affecting the profitability and viability of independent U.S. cattle producers. One of R-CALF USA’s top priorities is restoring mandatory country of origin labeling (MCOOL) for beef. The organization leads a national coalition of cattle\, farm\, rural and consumer groups working to reinstate MCOOL\, which requires retail beef to be labeled with the country or countries where the animal was born\, raised and harvested. \nWithout congressional action in the upcoming farm bill\, consumers have no way to know whether their beef comes from cattle raised in the United States or foreign imports. As a result\, they cannot choose to support American producers\, help strengthen the domestic beef supply or invest in the U.S. economy. The only beneficiaries of inaction on MCOOL are global meat importers. \nProducers and consumers are urged to call their members of Congress at 202-224-3121 and say: No Farm Bill Without MCOOL. For updates\, visit www.LabelOurBeef.com. \nRollover auctions are volunteer-led fundraisers where supporters bid on a donated calf\, then return it to be auctioned off again and again until bidding ends.
