David
Hutchins,
Region VIII Director
Hello fellow R-CALF USA members, I am David Hutchins Region VIII Director for R-CALF USA. My wife Marilyn and I own and operate Millcreek Angus Farm at West Mansfield, Ohio. We have six children whom all are involved in the cattle business. On both sides of my pedigree, I have all cattle producers or farmers. R-CALF USA will be around for a long time, if you are to remain an independent cattle producer. If you think that you’re smarter and a harder worker than the next-door neighbor, you may survive longer but the big boys will squeeze you out sooner than later. We need more active members in R-CALF USA. I think it is very possible in the next five years to see membership numbers grow to 30,000. We also will form a coalition with organizations that agree with us on certain issues. When you know you are right on the issues and well-informed, it is easy to convey your messages to your state, local and U.S. governments. It is pretty easy to distinguish a good R-CALF USA member from an NCBA member simply because the R-CALF USA member understands their position on issues, while the other side says just what they’re told to say. In the 1950s, my father thought that when we got the first herbicides that it would be great, that we would not ever have to worry about weeds in our crop again. However, in 2007, we spend more money than ever on herbicides. What I am trying to tell you is that there will always be a need for R-CALF USA. Don’t be afraid to get involved, as we need every member’s help if we are going to succeed in our efforts to make our industry better for the independent cattlemen of this great country.
