meatpoultry.com – Tuesday – November 11, 2008 (quotes R-CALF USA CEO Bill Bullard) More attorney generals try to block National Beef deal By Joel Crews WASHINGTON – Attorney generals from four additional states have joined an antitrust lawsuit backed by 13 other state attorney generals filed by the U.S. Department of Justice Oct. 20 against JBS S.A. in its proposed acquisition of National Beef Packing Co. Attorney Generals from Arizona, Connecticut, New Mexico and Mississippi were the latest to join the civil lawsuit, which also includes their counterparts in: Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Dakota, Texas and Wyoming. Executives with the producer-group, R-CALF USA are encouraged by the latest additions to the lawsuit. "We are grateful these other attorneys general have joined this fight and hope this action stops the trend toward more and more concentration, and less and less competition," said Bill Bullard, R-CALF’s chief executive. Mr. Bullard said the JBS acquisition of the Smithfield Beef Group, including its Five Rivers Ranch Cattle Feeding business, this past month makes blocking the National deal especially critical. "With the recent acquisition of Smithfield Beef Group by JBS, our cattle market in the U.S. is now so highly concentrated that only four firms control about 85 percent of the steer and heifer slaughter, which means we now have only a marginally competitive market left for independent U.S. cattle producers," he said. "The remaining packers are able to exert monopoly type power to exploit producers and consumers." http://www.meatpoultry.com/news/daily_enews.asp?ArticleID=97954&e=sdodson@r-calfusa.com
