WEEKLY NEWS HIGHLIGHTS

Antitrust Action Taken -- The Department of Justice has filed an antitrust lawsuit, seeking to prevent JBS from acquiring National Beef Packing. National Cattlemen's Beef Association President Andy Groseta welcomes this action, saying his organization supports free and fair competition in the marketplace. R-CALF USA CEO Bill Bullard is also pleased with this antitrust action. JBS has already purchased Swift Foods and is in the process of acquiring the Smithfield Beef Group and Five Rivers Ranch Cattle Feeding. "We were hopeful that they would've blocked the entire merger rather than just the concentration or horizontal merger component," said Bullard. Senate Agriculture Committee Chairman Tom Harkin said the Justice Department attempt to block the National Beef merger is welcome news for cattlemen and consumers.
