WNAX Ag Radio – Wednesday – October 15, 2008 OCM Supports R-CALF’s Plan on Financial Crisis R-CALF is asking the Bush Administration and Congress to take immediate steps to prevent the current financial crisis that’s harming the ag industry. The Organization for Competitive Markets supports R-CALF’s plan. Executive Director Fred Stokes says they back an end to further concentration or consolidation in the U.S. cattle and beef industries. Bite #1 :25 OC: “that’s pending out there.” “A lot of people are going through some rough times now, and, uh, ranchers and farmers are not exempt from these tough times. Right now, cattle producers are losing money, based on current prices, and we need, they’re gonna need, some help to make it through, and the plan that R-CALF has laid out is something that we heartily endorse. We do not need further concentration, which would mean that we certainly don’t need to approve this JBS Swift merger that’s pending out there.” Stokes says OCM also like other parts of R-CALF’s proposal including a ban on cattle imports from Canada and Mexico and stepped up enforcement of COOL. Bite #2 :24 OC: “on the U.S. cattle industry.” “We don’t need to be flooded with imports, and we need to clearly identify U.S. products that are produced here as being U.S. products, and not confuse ‘em or water ‘em down by labeling such that they could’ve emanated from Canada or Mexico in the process, so we are supportive of R-CALF and continue to be so, and we think this is a great move, and we’re backing it.” OCM agrees with R-CALF that swift implementation of this plan would significantly mitigate the profound, negative affects the current financial crisis is having on the U.S. cattle industry.
