National Provisioner – Wednesday – September 26, 2007 – 10:31 a.m. MDT R-CALF USA objects to Peru FTA By
Tom Wray WASHINGTON - Ranchers-Cattlemen Action Legal Fund, United Stockgrowers of America has asked the U.S. House Ways and Means Committee to oppose a free trade agreement with Peru. “Regrettably, this particular agreement that Congress is about to consider raises serious concerns for independent U.S. cattle producers,” said R-CALF USA Trade Committee Chair Eric Nelson in a release from the group. “Last October, a bipartisan group of Representatives from major cattle-producing states alerted the U.S. Trade Representative to these concerns in a formal letter, yet the Peru FTA remains unchanged in these crucial areas.” The organization said in the release it is worried about the presence of foot-and-mouth disease, low safeguards on the safety of beef from the country and weak rules of origin for the beef. Also, R-CALF states, the FTA neither recognizes the highly perishable and cyclical nature of cattle and beef, nor provides relief to independent U.S. cattle producers in the event of sudden import surges or price volatility.
