Letter To Janet Napolitano, Secretary, Department of Homeland Security regarding the FMD Facility December 21, 2010 (PDF 51K) Spring 2010 The Cowboy Way Article by Bill Bullard "Why America is Losing Its Ranchers; And, what we as a nation can do about it" July 22, 2009 - USDA Kowtows to Canada’s Threats, Denies U.S. Citizens Truthful Information About the Origins of Their Food As evidenced by recently disclosed government documents, Canada effectively used the World Trade Organization (WTO) to gain superior leverage over an important U.S. rulemaking process – to the detriment of U.S. citizens. These documents reveal that Canada wrested substantial concessions from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) during the eleventh hour of the agency’s official rulemaking for the United States’ mandatory country-of-origin labeling (COOL) law.
For many Americans, international trade policy has been an obscure, complicated web of technical jargon. But now, trade policy has landed squarely on the kitchen table of every U.S. citizen as foreign countries attempt to undermine each citizen’s right to know where their food is produced. Canada and Mexico each have filed a complaint against the United States’ constitutionally passed country-of-origin labeling (COOL) law, which requires a label on meat, produce and certain other products to disclose the origin of those products when they are sold to consumers at retail. July 7, 2009 - Schumacher Loses Over $260,000 from Cattle Sales to Tyson; Now Tyson Wants Schumacher’s Home Herreid, S.D., rancher and cattle feeder Herman Schumacher has suffered losses exceeding $260,000 from the sale of three pens of cattle (984 head) sold to Tyson Fresh Meats Inc. (Tyson) since January 1, 2009, yet Schumacher’s three pens of cattle were top performers. His 984 cattle gained an average of 459 pounds in just 136 days, representing an average daily gain of 3.37 pounds. Schumacher lost an average of over $265 per animal when he sold his cattle to Tyson, which resulted in a total loss to Schumacher of nearly $261,000. July 1, 2009 - Consumers Pay Near Record Beef Prices; Tyson, Other Packers Capture Unjust Share of Profits from Schumacher, Other Ranchers While meatpacker giant Tyson Fresh Meats (Tyson) continues its legal action to seize the home of Herreid, S.D., rancher Herman Schumacher, consumers pay near record beef prices and cattle ranchers like Schumacher receive below cost-of-production prices for their cattle. May 2009 - "Yes, Big Brother Wants Your Horses Too" This insanity persists despite the fact that the U.S. has the best veterinary infrastructure, which has effectively contained, controlled and eradicated pernicious livestock diseases for over a century, and the most successful disease prevention programs operated by each of the 50 states in conjunction with the federal government, of any country in the world. April 2009 - Where the Beef We Eat Originates So, as consumers living in the largest beef producing and consuming nation, when you buy beef at your grocery store, you’re buying beef produced solely in the USA, right? Not necessarily! You see, another distinction held by the U.S. is that it also is the world’s largest beef importer. While the U.S. cattle herd has been shrinking, beef imports have been increasing. ... From 2000 to 2007, the U.S. annually imported over 3 billion pounds of beef. |
